CSA Information

It's our first warm day in March and you can feel the earth waking up. We're excited about our new season and hope to continue providing top quality food for you to enjoy. It's time to start planning our upcoming season, so any feedback from our former CSA shareholders is always welcome. We will have a new face on the farm this year, Jon Gowing, who is an enthusiastic farmer looking to add his knowledge and muscles to make this a great growing season. We are now taking applications for the 2013 season, visit our new website and follow the easy steps to register. We have a limited amount of shares available, so book your spot early!
We are also sponsoring a forum on alternative ways to finance farming so that farmland stays more affordable in this region

Spring into Summer!

It's hot.
The unseasonably hot and dry spring means that we have been busy in the garden transplanting, weeding and watering, watering, watering. Luckily, today has brought rain meaning we can take a much needed break from watering the fields and do some administrative work, writing this lovely blog post for instance. We have many crops growing happily in the field and will soon be ready to make the transition from field to plate.

Our Napa cabbage and Rainbow chard are looking especially excellent and will available soon at markets and in the our first CSA veggie boxes.

The hot weather also means that our wooly friends were particularly pleased to have their spring time shear.......

April and May has seen the growth of our ever expanding farm family. By the end of April all of the senior farmers returned to work the fields. We were lucky to have two lovely women from Katimavik billet with us for ten days, thanks for all your hard work Anna and Erin. We also have many new CSA members this season. And finally we have two interns joining us for the start of June and a third will be joining in a few weeks (look for farmer bios in an upcoming blog).

Our garden is shaping up well in the early season and we are guaranteed to have a variety of delicious veggies ready for the beginning of our CSA program. CSA SHARES ARE STILL AVAILABLE, to sign up send us the information specified on the application form here and a cheque. We have also started going to the Brantford farmers' market on Saturdays from 7am-2pm. This week we will have spinach, arugula, lettuce, salad mix, chard, rhubard and herbs available, so come check us out for all your early season veggie needs.

We have been very busy preparing for this upcoming season and we are confident it will be our best yet! Our seedlings are growing happily and we are beginning to transplant them to the fields. In the photo below you can see our asparagus seedlings.

In the photo above you can see a variety of our seedlings in the greenhouse. Melons and cantaloupes are in the middle with the wide leaves. Just behind them with the purple stems are tomatoes, and to the front with the thin, single stalks are leeks. The photo below is a close-up of some Brandywine tomato seedlings.

Off to a great start!
